Leiden University
Life Sciences research in Leiden
Life sciences and medicine is one of the key research areas in Leiden. The Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) and the Science Faculty of Leiden University have a strong focus on life sciences research, and a high-quality international reputation in areas such as medical sciences, biopharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, (cel)biology and (bio)physics. Research institutes that are part of the Science Faculty address disciplinary and interdisciplinary research themes.
Key themes of research include drug discovery and pharmacogenomics, design and synthesis of biomolecules, functional genomics, proteomics, bio-imaging, biomolecular interactions and modelling.
The motto for LUMC research ‘from bench to bedsite’ reflects the emphasis on translational research. Medical genomics & proteomics, bio-informatics and biostatistics, psychiatry and infectious diseases are some of the key research areas. The Centre for Medical Systems Biology, the CYTTRON Program on Bio-imaging and the Top Institute Pharma are some examples of national centres of expertise and research consortia which have their basis in Leiden.
Together with the companies and organisations in the Leiden Bio Science Park, which houses the largest concentration of dedicated life sciences companies in The Netherlands, a strong life sciences cluster has been established with a clear vision on innovation and cluster development in the life sciences in Leiden (see "Links to local initiatives" to find out more).
